As previously announced, here are some tips on what to do when you are suspicious that an email might be a phishing scheme or spam message:

Stop Spam

  • Use a Web Browser with antiphishing detection, such as Internet Explorer.
  • Double-check URL to make sure it matches the sender’s address and is legit.
  • When receiving an email from your bank for example, asking you to change passwords, open a new window in your browser and type in the address manually rather than clicking the link.
  • Watch out for pop-ups and windows opening in the background.
  • When in doubt: don’t open the email/link. Hover your mouse over suspicious looking links as this will display the full URL.
  • If you receive a suspicious email from a coworker/boss, send that person a separate email to make sure they actually sent that email.
  • Use strong passwords (click here for our previous Tech Tip on how to create safe passwords).
  • If your email provider offers you the feature to block and report spam, you should do so.
