Copilot Tips: Access GPT-5 – Tech Tip for September 10, 2025

In this week’s tech tip, we walk through the different experiences and ways to access GPT-5 in Microsoft Copilot. Whether working at a desk, on a laptop, or from a mobile device. Copilot makes GPT-5 available across platforms. We also share how to check whether you are running GPT-5 or GPT-4 Turbo, so you can make the most of your Copilot sessions. Let’s review!

Access on the Web

The easiest way to start using GPT-5 is through Copilot Chat on www.microsoft365.com

  • Sign in with a Microsoft 365 account.
  • Open Copilot Chat from the left menu.
  • Look for the ‘Try GPT-5’ option to engage GPT-5.

TIPS: If the option is not visible, Copilot is likely running on GPT-4 Turbo, although most experiences will have incorporated GPT-5 as the AI has been rolling out as of August 2025. Copilot falls back on GPT-4 Turbo automatically when GPT-5 is not available.

Access on Windows and Mac

GPT-5 is also available in the Copilot app for Windows and macOS.

  • Open the Copilot icon from the taskbar or menu bar.
  • Select the ‘Try GPT-5’ button inside the Chat window.
  • Use ‘Quick Response’ options (Quick Response, Think Deeper, Smart, Deep Research) to shape Copilot’s responses.
  • Select the ‘Smart (GPT-5)’ option to engage GPT-5.

TIPS: The desktop app works well for multitasking as a standalone app you can easily open and prompt with alongside other open apps.

TIPS: Use the quick Windows keyboard shortcut ‘Windows logo’ + ‘C’ to open Copilot.

Access on Mobile

Copilot’s mobile apps also support GPT-5. Try GPT-5 experiences in either ‘M365 Copilot’ or ‘Copilot’ standalone apps.

  • Download the Copilot or M365 Copilot app(s) from the iOS App Store or Google Play.
  • Sign in with a Microsoft account.
  • In M365 Copilot: Tap the ‘Try GPT-5’ button in the chat interface (prompt area).
  • In Copilot: Tap the ‘Quick response’ button option to switch to ‘Smart (GPT-5)’ in the chat interface (prompt area).

TIPS: Access M365 Copilot’s simple sample prompts such as ‘List key points’ to quickly refer to and list key document points on-the-go or while in meetings.

TIPS: In the Copilot app, the ‘Smart (GPT-5)’ response mode option will adapt naturally to shorter, on-the-go prompts.

Inside Microsoft Apps

GPT-5 is not yet embedded or available directly inside Teams or Office applications with Copilot integrations such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint or OneNote, although Copilot chat powered by GPT-4 Turbo is available in each of these separate experiences.

  • Open alternate GPT-5 experiences to work with Copilot in this mode.
  • Draft a message, plan, or analysis with GPT-5 in alternate experiences before copying and pasting it into Teams, Outlook or other office apps.

Accessing GPT-5 in Microsoft Copilot is straightforward across web, desktop, and mobile apps. By looking for the ‘Try GPT-5’ button or the ‘Quick responses’ options and ‘Smart (GPT-5)’ option and understanding when Turbo steps in, users can take advantage of GPT-5’s natural language improvements wherever the work happens. We hope you’ll try GPT-5 and see how it enhances productivity across devices.
