Edge Tips: Copilot AI in Edge – Tech Tip for September 25, 2025

In this week’s tech tip, we focus on Microsoft Edge and its growing suite of AI features. Edge now integrates Copilot Sidebar, Copilot Mode, and Copilot Vision, each designed to make browsing smarter and more productive. We show you how to access these features, and what each does, and some limitations to be aware of. Let’s dive in!

Copilot Sidebar in Edge

The Copilot Sidebar has been a part of Edge for some time, providing AI assistance directly alongside your browsing.

Access Copilot Sidebar in Edge:

  • Open Microsoft Edge.
  • From the right-side of the window, select the Copilot icon.
  • The Copilot Sidebar will appear.
  • Sign in with your Microsoft account if prompted.
    • Type a prompt to ask questions, summarize a page, draft text or perform calculations.
    • Review and copy responses as needed for documents, emails, or Teams messages.

TIP: Copilot Sidebar works well for multitasking since it stays open while you browse multiple tabs. Use it to quickly summarize web pages or compare content across sites.

TIP: Additional Copilot features will require Microsoft Copilot add-in licensing.

Copilot Mode in Edge

Copilot Mode is an experimental, immersive AI experience that shifts Edge from a standard browser into a task-focused environment.

Access Copilot Mode in Edge:

  • Ensure that Edge is updated to the latest version (Edge 138+).
  • Look for Copilot Mode options in Settings in Edge.
    • Use a Personal or non-synced account to access Copilot Mode in Edge.
      • Create or switch profiles if you are syncing to a work (Entra ID) account in Edge.
    • From the ‘AI Innovations’ tab in AI settings, select ‘Explore Copilot Mode.’
      • If ‘AI Innovations’ tab is not visible, create or switch to a personal or non-synced account profile.
    • Toggle on the switch to opt-in to ‘Copilot Mode.’
    • Open a new tab to access Copilot Mode-related features.
    • First Time Use: Select ‘Continue’ when prompted to ‘Navigate the Web with Copilot.’

TIP: Copilot Mode can provide insights on multiple open tabs, but only if you grant it permission. Prompt comparisons across multiple websites, summarize, and more.

TIP: Copilot Mode is currently restricted to free or personal accounts, but access may continue to expand. Microsoft also notes that ‘availability of Copilot Mode is subject to change.’

Copilot Vision in Edge

Copilot Vision enables AI to interpret visual content on your screen with Edge, giving context-aware assistance. Vision is available in Copilot in Edge, Windows, and on mobile.

Access Copilot Vision:

  • Open Microsoft Edge and sign in with a Personal or Pro account profile.
  • Take the ‘Let’s Get Started’ tour to walk-through and launch ‘Vision.’
    • Select the ‘Copilot’ icon (top-right) to open the Copilot Sidebar.
    • Press the ‘Voice’ (microphone) button when prompted.
    • Select ‘Accept’ to enable ‘Copilot Vision’ for the first time.

  • The Copilot Vision floating menu will appear in Edge near the bottom middle of the browser when active.
    • Turn ‘Voice’ (Microphone icon) or ‘Vision’ (Glasses icon) off and ‘Exit’ (‘X’ to close the feature) when not in use.
    • ‘Settings’ (Gear icon) will allow you to choose from different voice styles for the AI.

Relaunch Copilot Voice and Vision from a New Tab

Open a new browser tab in Edge:

  • Select the ‘Voice’ (Microphone icon) button from Copilot Mode page prompt area to re-launch the Voice and Vision floating menu.

Use Voice and Vision to ask questions such as:

  • “Summarize the content of this page.”
  • “Highlight key details from this table.”
  • “Explain what this diagram shows.”

TIP: Vision is not available to commercial users signed into Copilot or Edge with an Entra ID account.

TIP: Vision cannot physically ‘take control’ of your device or browser or navigate you to specific websites or places, but it can tell you how to get there (ex. ‘type “bestbuy.com” in your browser’).

TIP: Vision can be used in tandem with Copilot Mode and Copilot Sidebar access for side-by-side analysis of documents, web pages, or images for deeper insights.

Microsoft Edge brings AI into a single platform where Copilot Sidebar, Mode, and Vision work together to complement each other. Even if Copilot Mode or Vision are not fully available in your enterprise environment, Copilot Sidebar still provides robust assistance in Edge. Be sure to try out these recent Copilot features and additions in Edge!
