Edge Tips: Single Sign-On – Tech Tip for October 10, 2025
In this week’s tech tip, we take a closer look at how Microsoft Edge manages your Microsoft 365 logins through Single Sign-On (SSO). Whether you are using multiple work accounts, signing into shared mailboxes, or managing browser profiles, knowing how Edge handles authentication can help keep your experience secure and consistent across devices. Let’s explore how SSO works and what to watch for in recent updates.
Understanding Single Sign-On in Edge
Microsoft Edge uses Single Sign-On (SSO) to automatically connect your browser profile to your Microsoft 365 account. Once you sign into your device or browser with a work or school account, Edge can securely use those credentials across Microsoft services.
How SSO Works in Edge:
- If you sign into Edge directly, your browser profile syncs your bookmarks, passwords, and settings through your Microsoft account.
- SSO reduces the need to repeatedly enter your password when using Microsoft 365 apps in Edge once the browser is synced to your Microsoft 365 account.
TIP: If you use both personal and work accounts, make sure each is signed into its own browser profile to prevent mix-ups. Profiles are color-coded and can be renamed in Edge to help you quickly tell them apart.
Managing Multiple Accounts
Edge allows multiple profiles so you can switch between accounts easily—for example, between your Work (Entra ID) Microsoft 365 login and your Personal Microsoft account.

How to Manage Profiles in Edge:
- Open Edge and select your Profile icon (top-right corner).
- Select options to create a new profile:
- Personal profile: Select ‘Set up new personal profile.’
- Work profile: Select ‘Other’ and ‘Setup a new work or school profile.’
- Sign in with the appropriate Microsoft 365 Work or Personal account.
- Switch Profiles: Click Profile icon again and choose the desired account.
TIP: Assign each profile its own theme, extensions, and favorites. Each profile keeps its own browsing history and login sessions, helping to separate Work from Personal use.
Recent Changes and Known Behavior
While SSO improves convenience, there are a few limitations to be aware of—especially for organizations and shared environments.
- Shared Mailboxes: SSO does not automatically authenticate shared mailboxes in Outlook Web or other Microsoft 365 web apps. You’ll need to sign in manually when accessing shared mailboxes.
- Multiple Accounts: Edge currently supports one active SSO session per browser profile. If you use multiple Microsoft 365 tenants, you’ll need to create a separate Edge profile for each (or use an ‘InPrivate’ browsing session).
- Sync Restrictions: Some organizations may restrict sync for managed account via Azure AD or Intune policies, preventing password and settings sync between devices.
- Enterprise (IE) Mode Sites: Certain enterprise-managed sites may still prompt for authentication due to conditional access or browser isolation settings.
TIP: If you notice repeated sign-in prompts or access errors, try signing out and back into your Edge profile, or verify your organization authentication settings in Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) with your IT support.
Keeping SSO Secure in Edge
Managing sign-ins across profiles means protecting your accounts with secure settings.

Review Edge Security Settings:
- From your Profile icon (top-right corner), select the profile you wish to check.
- Select the ‘…’ (Ellipses) button to access ‘Settings’ in that profile.
- Select ‘Passwords and autofill’ and choose from ‘Microsoft Password Manager,’ ‘Payment methods,’ or ‘Personal info’ to review stored credentials and information.
- Review saved passwords and other information for outdated or duplicate entries.
- Enable Two-step verification or Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) through your Microsoft 365 account settings.
TIP: Avoid signing into unmanaged devices with your work account unless required. Clear saved passwords on shared or public computers (sign-out of active sessions). Use Microsoft Authenticator app for a smoother MFA experience when signing into Edge and Microsoft 365.
Understanding how Edge handles Microsoft 365 logins through SSO helps you work more securely and efficiently. By using separate profiles, being aware of shared mailbox and sync limitations, and keeping MFA enabled, you can streamline your sign-ins without sacrificing security. We hope you find these tips helpful as you manage your accounts across Edge and Microsoft 365.
