Teams Tips: Follow Channel Threads – Tech Tip for December 4, 2025

In this week’s tech tip, we’re focusing on staying organized inside Microsoft Teams channels. With conversations happening across multiple posts, it’s easy to miss updates. Following channel threads helps you stay up to date, organize replies, and manage conversations without losing context. This simple but powerful feature keeps everything tidy and easy to track. Here’s how to make the most of it!

Follow Channel Threads to Stay Organized

Channel threads help you keep conversations in Teams organized so you can easily follow discussions, reply to specific posts, and stay up to date without losing context.

From Channels in Teams:

  • Open a channel in Teams where conversations are happening (Posts).
  • Look for posts grouped in threads—these show related replies under original posts.
  • Click ‘Reply in thread’ under a specific post to keep your response within the thread.
  • Click the ‘…’ ellipses button to access post options in the drop-down menu.
  • To stay informed, select to ‘Follow thread’ on important discussions. Select ‘Unfollow thread’ on threads you no longer wish to follow.
  • Take it a step further:
    • Use Teams’ recently added Followed threads view to see all the threads you’re tracking in one place.
    • Click the ‘Go to Followed threads link’ when it appears or select ‘Followed threads’ from the Teams menu at left to see all threads you’re tracking in one place.

TIP: Combine thread following with @mentions to quickly respond when your attention is needed.

TIP: Encourage team members to reply within threads rather than starting new messages or posts—this keeps conversations organized and easier to search later.

Access Channel Notifications and Options in Teams

To adjust how much activity you want to see from a channel, you can update your notification settings in just a few clicks.

Access Teams Chats and Channels in Settings:

  • Select the ‘…’ ellipses button (to the left of your Profile icon) to access Teams ‘Settings.’
  • From ‘Chats and channels,’ select or deselect following threads you create, reply to, or threads where you are mentioned.
  • From ‘Notifications and activity,’ and the ‘Chats and channels’ section, adjust the settings for ‘Replies to threads and posts,’ ‘@mentions’ and more.

Adjust Individual Channel Settings:

  • Select the ‘…’ ellipses button (top-right in every channel).
  • Click ‘Channel notifications.’
  • Choose to get notified ‘for all new posts’ or to ‘follow all new threads’ in a channel and ‘Save’ to save any adjustments made.

Following threads is one of the easiest ways to stay organized in busy Teams channels. By keeping discussions connected and visible, you reduce the risk of missing important updates and make collaboration smoother for everyone. Try following a few key threads this week to see how much it improves your workflow and keeps you on top of collaborative Teams channel discussions!
