Windows Tips and Features: Preparing for Upgrade – Tech Tip for October 8, 2024
In this week’s Tech Tip, we guide you through the key steps to preparing for an upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free transition. Windows 11 brings a host of new features and improvements, but it also requires careful preparation to avoid any potential issues. By following these steps, you can make sure that your upgrade process is efficient and trouble-free.
System Requirements
Meeting Windows 11’s minimum requirements can help to ensure optimal performance, security, and compatibility with new features. It also helps to avoid potential issues (system instability and unsupported hardware).
Verify that your system meets Windows 11’s minimum requirements:
- Processor: 1 GHz or faster, 2 cores, 64-bit compatible. Ensuring your processor meets these standards is crucial for optimal performance.
- RAM: 4 GB or more. Adequate RAM ensures that your system runs smoothly and can handle multiple tasks.
- Storage: 64 GB or larger. Sufficient storage is necessary not just for the OS but for future updates and applications.
- System firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot capable. This helps in enhancing security and boot performance.
- TPM: Version 2.0. Trusted Platform Module (TPM) adds an additional layer of security by protecting sensitive data.
- Graphics card: DirectX 12 or later with a WDDM 2.0 driver. This ensures better graphics performance and support for new features.
- Display: 720p (HD) display greater than 9” diagonally, 8 bits per color channel. A compatible display allows you to fully enjoy the visual enhancements of Windows 11.
- Internet and Microsoft Account: Required for setup, updates, and features. A stable internet connection is essential (for updates and online features). A Microsoft Account is required to complete initial device setup (for Home and Pro editions).
- Windows Version for Upgrade: Device must be running Windows 10, version 2004, or later, to upgrade via Windows Update.
- Copilot+ PCs: All the above plus compatible processor or System on a Chip (SoCs currently include the Snapdragon® X Plus and the Snapdragon® X Elite). Microsoft will update this list regularly. RAM should include a minimum of 16 GB (DDR5/LPDDR5) and storage a minimum of 256 GB (SSD/UFS).
Backup Your Data
Backing up data ensures that all your important files and settings are preserved in case something goes wrong during the upgrade process. It also provides peace of mind, knowing you can easily restore your system to its previous state if needed.
Ensure your data is safe before upgrading:
- External Hard Drive: Save copies of important files. This provides a physical backup that you can easily access if needed.
- Cloud Storage: Use services like OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox. Cloud storage offers an additional layer of security and accessibility from anywhere.
- Backup Software: Automate and schedule backups. Software solutions can simplify the backup process and ensure regular updates.
- System Image: Create an image of your current setup. This acts as a fail-safe, allowing you to restore your system exactly as it was before the upgrade.
TIP: Using Microsoft OneDrive to back up your files simplifies the transition process by automatically syncing your files, so you don’t have to worry about manually transferring files.
Update Drivers and Software
Updating all drivers and software ensures compatibility with Windows 11, reducing the risk of crashes or malfunctions during and after the upgrade. It also helps maintain system stability and performance by providing the latest enhancements and security patches.
Update Windows to avoid compatibility issues:
- Check for Updates: Keeping your system updated reduces the risk of encountering problems during the upgrade:
- From Taskbar, search for and select, ‘Settings’:
- Select ‘Update & Security’ and ‘Windows Update.’

Update system drivers and software:
- Device Manager: Update crucial component drivers. This ensures all hardware components work seamlessly with the new OS.
- Manufacturer’s Website: Download the latest drivers and firmware. Manufacturer updates often include optimizations and fixes specific to your hardware.
- Software Updates: Ensure applications are up to date. Updated software is more likely to be compatible with Windows 11, reducing the risk of crashes or malfunctions.

Plan the Upgrade
Planning your transition to Windows 11 will ensure a smooth upgrade process by minimizing downtime and avoiding unexpected issues. It also allows you to schedule the upgrade at a convenient time, ensuring all necessary preparations are in place for a successful transition.
Choose the right time to minimize disruption:
- Off-Peak Hours: Schedule during non-critical times. This ensures that the upgrade process does not interfere with your daily activities.
- Weekend or Holiday: Upgrading during downtime allows for troubleshooting. Additional time means you can address any issues without pressure.
- Battery and Power: Ensure your device is plugged in and charged. Power interruptions during the upgrade can cause significant problems.
- Internet Connection: A stable connection is essential for downloads. An unstable connection can lead to incomplete downloads and installation issues.
With careful preparation, upgrading to Windows 11 can be seamless and stress-free. Following these steps will ensure your system is ready and your important data is secure.
