Sunscreen Day
Sunscreen Day is celebrated every year on May 27th and is supposed to educate and bring awareness to the importance of using sunscreen to protect yourself from harmful UV rays from the sun. In lieu of this day we wanted to educate you on the best practices for handling your electronic devices in hot weather, as those also need special care and attention.
If your electronic device gets too hot, it is possible that the hardware inside your computer is either being destroyed or its lifespan significantly shortened. This in turn can lead to substantial data loss and irreparable damage. To avoid all that, we advise you to take precautions when interacting with those devices in hot weather. Below please find a few tips on how to prevent them from overheating:
- Keep them in a cool and dry area.
- Remove them from your vehicle, especially when parked in the sun.
- Make sure the device’s fans are working properly and allow for proper air flow. Clean them if needed (make sure the system is powered off when doing so).
- Do not overwork your devices and shut down any programs that aren’t in use.
- Elevate your laptop, but make sure to not block the bottom of the fan and to use a hard surface rather than a soft one.
- Purchase a laptop cooling mat or additional ventilation systems – there are many options to chose from.
- Do not keep your electronic devices near other heat sources, such as a stove or a fire place.
- Avoid stacking them on top of each other, as one device alone already generates enough heat as is.
Note: If your computer overheats anyway, we advise you to shut it down and let it cool off. Do not take the device apart as you might interrupt the airflow to some of its most critical components!
